 Silba is located southeast from Lošinj /44°23'N; 14°42'E/ between the islands of Premuda and Olib, and it is one of the 18 inhabited islands of the Zadar archipelago. It is the furthest north island in Dalmatia, reason for being called, among seamen, the “border” or ”door to Dalmatia". Silba has a surface area of 15 square kilometers, 8,3 km long and 3,3 km wide. Observed from the air it has a number-eight shape. The highest point on the island is Mount Varh (80 meters). The locality of Silba is situated at the very link of the island’s number- eight shape, which is only 700 meters wide. It is the only settlement on the island with a population of 270 permanent inhabitants. In the summer months the population multiplies to thousands due to the arrival of numerous tourists. The shores of the island cherish gravel coves and sandy beaches. Silba, along with the island of Mljet, is the most wooded Croatian island. Sources of drinking water have been found on the island. The nearest city on the coast is Zadar, at 30 knots distance. |
