There are six churches on the island of Silba. The oldest among them, the church of Saint John, is only at ten minutes from the center of the island, north from the main road. It was built at the end of the 16th cent on the site of the 10th cent. church of Saint Peter. The building of the church was made possible by the Matković family. The church of Saint Mark (17th cent.) is located in the center of the local cemetery, at five minutes from the beach after which it got its name - Pocukmark. The church was erected by Antun Vinturić in 1637, as a vow for safe sea sailing.  The church of Saint Mary of Karmela (17th cent.) and the nearby monastery, belonged to the Franciscans. The brothers Matija and Šimun Paulina built it in 1660. It is at five minutes from the beaches Tratica and Carpusina. The Bujačić family had the church of Saint Anthony built in the 18th cent. It is located at a distance of thirty minutes from the center of the island, in a cove that was named after it, Saint Anthony’s Port. The church is a central gathering place in the month of June, on the occasion of the feast of Saint Anthony, when a procession takes place from the center of the locality to the church. The church of Saint Mary of Sorrow (18th cent.) was built in 1758 by Paskva from Brač and is situated in the very center of the locality. The church of Saint Mary (19th cent.) is the biggest church on the island. The inhabitants started building the church in 1799 when they realized that St. Mark’s church had become too small for their needs, and they decided to gather money for the building of a new one. It was finished in 1839, and has since then been the principal church on the island. |
